Our facility is referred to in the childcare industry as a drop in day care or drop in childcare center. The definition of Drop-in Childcare is a childcare arrangement where care is provided while parents participate in activities that are not employment related, and where parents are easily accessible. We must be able to reach a guardian and they must be able to return to the facility within 15 minutes.
Please call ahead during the holiday season and days that schools are closed so that we can plan our staff accordingly. Lately, we are growing pretty fast and have even filled up from time to time. Until we can address the need for more space to allow more children, we ask that you call ahead if at all possible. During busy times we cannot guarantee a walk in opening if you have not called ahead.
Although the number of kids that we have at any given time is always changing, we do our very best to make sure that we have enough staff on site by using on-call shifts and try hard to avoid rising above an 8-1 child-adult ratio.
There is no registration fee, we just need all of the important info so that we can care for your child. Once you’ve registered, we need a parent or legal guardian to sign our policies, guidelines and release form.
If your child may have separation anxiety, it is a good idea to bring a pacifier or lovey to help calm them. However, please don't bring toys from home as they can get lost, cause conflicts among other children or pose a choking hazard.
If you would like to come and take a look around before you drop your child off for the first time, please feel free!
We know that the greatest compliment you can give us is to leave your child in our care. It is a true honor and privilege to watch over your awesome child. And it’s fun, too!
A note from Ms. Tara, about us.
Hi Porter’s Neck families!
Our names are Tara and Lori and we are very excited to bring Porter’s Neck Play House to our area. We both attended UNC Wilmington and have worked and played in the Porter’s Neck area for over 25 years combined. It is a pleasure to bring a safe, fun, learning-encouraged play center to our area’s families.
Between the two of us, we have 5 fantastic children ranging from 6 yrs-12 yrs old. We both know the challenges associated with finding a good fit for your family and the many concerns that come with enrolling your children at a drop in or after school program. Your children's safety and happiness is our focus. We will foster a healthy balance of active play and quiet time, encourage artistic self-expression and embolden them with leadership skills. Everyone plays at the play house.
Porter’s Neck Play House is unique in that we pay attention to details that keep our Play House friends safe, clean and well taken care of emotionally, physically, intellectually and socially.
Lori and I are both quite active in our kids’ schools, churches and involved with many extra circular stuff in the area. Lori is one of those ladies that is easy to be around, always cheerful and the kind of person you absorb happiness from just by being near her. She is a chemist and an environmental biologist, a missionary at Port City Community Church and the most involved mom I know. So many children from this community already know and love her. As for myself I have been a journalist, a restaurant owner, a stay at home mom and substitute teacher. My interests are children, painting, reading and visiting new places. Porter’s Neck Play House is a dream come true for Lori and me and is so much more rewarding than running a restaurant or lab!
We will be respectful of all children, their uniquities, abilities and their imaginations. We will teach sharing, kindness and forgiveness. In turn, we also expect all children to be respectful of themselves, their parents, other children and our staff. We do not tolerate physical violence, foul language or bullying of any kind.
The Play House is pretty awesome, and we want every child to feel included and enjoy a safe, happy and playful environment. If you should have any concerns or questions-- we are here to chat.
